Installing VMware Workstation 10 on Windows 8.1

Current version

As of this writing the current version of VMware Workstation is 10. Version 11 is scheduled to be released in December 2014.

Download the installation file

For this example, I will be using the Windows version and installing it on Windows 8.1.

Download the VMware Workstation 10 by clicking on the Download Now next to the version of your choice.

Execute the downloaded file and the Setup wizard will begin the installation.

Read through the License Agreement if warranted and select the radial button next to I accept and click on Next.

Select either Typical or Custom Setup Type. The typical setup works fine for most everything I test. Choose custom if you would like more control over the setup or have other needs.

You may change the install location at this point as needed.

Select to check for product updates on startup.

Choose whether you wish to participate in uploading usage statistics to VMware.

Select the shortcuts you wish created.

Select Continue to, well, continue.

Enter your license or skip for a trial period of 30 days.

Select the second option and enter an email address to being your trial.

Exploring the File menu you have the ability to Create a new virtual machine, open an existing one, connect to an ESXi server, Virtualize a physical machine, export an OVF (once machines exist), and map virtual disks.

Under the Edit menu you’ll find the standard cut, copy, and paste. Also available is the Virtual Network Editor, and the program preferences.

Select the Virtual Network Editor to check on the existing networks or to create a new host only or bridged network. Note: only one NAT network can exist.

If the NAT network is selected the DHCP settings can be view by selecting the DHCP settings button.

Under Preferences you can change the location your virtual machines are stored as well has a ton of other settings. Explore and change if needed.
